The ACL, Anterior Cruciate ligament, runs from the front of your tibia to the back of your femur. It is located deep within the knee capsule.

Most people will have an audible pop during some sport or high level activity. It can be very painful with swelling, reduced range of motion, and feelings of instability.

We can do some hands-on testing in our clinic, but diagnostic imaging, such as MRI, is required to determine if a full tear is present.

It can be painful and stiff. The most telling sign is the knee giving “away” or feelings of instability.

There is no one size fits all protocol. It depends on the type of graft, the other injuries involved, and the function of the patient. We will work with what is suggested by your surgeon and a criterion based protocol. We will advance you as you show the ability to perform!

There is great research that the re-tear rates of ACL surgeries fall drastically after 12 months post operative. However, you can expect to be walking normally by 4-8 weeks. We can begin testing for return to running at 12 weeks, depending on the specific surgery type.
